Fountain Class

Photos taken at the fountain making class at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga

This April I participated in a workshop on Indoor Fountain Making at the local Japanese park, Hakone Gardens. I had promised Yoshiko an indoor fountain for our last anniversary, and since we were unable to find any that suited her we decided it was best to just make our own. We have many beautiful rocks that were collected during some of our travels and thought some of them might look good in a fountain.

Since niether of us had any idea on how to make a fountain it seemed a class, or workshop, was in order. Fortunately, Carla Brooke from "Studio in the Trees" was offering just such a workshop at the nearby Hakone Gardens. Our half-day class was attended by 8 students. Below are some pictures taken during the class and the results of our initial efforts to make indoor fountains.

These are four of the class members cleaning and preparing some slate for their fountains

We each brought our own bowls in which to build our fountains. Our sensei, Carla, (center) provided all the other materials and gave instruction.

And here is the proud student with his finished product

I think it really lookd nice! The small pieces of bamboo were found lying nearby the work area.

And here is the finished fountain from yet another student.

And here is my masterpiece!

I took it home and rebuilt it to surprize Yoshiko

But after she got home we really revised it. This is the final fountain in Yoshi's studio.
